The Confraternity of the Brown Scapular
When in May 1981 he was shot, he insisted doctors not remove his Scapular. Carmelite Father Mariano Cera told Inside the Vatican magazine: "Just before the Holy Father was operated on, he told the doctors 'Don't take off the Scapular.' And the surgeons left it on."
In a letter to the Carmelites, John Paul II wrote that “the most genuine form of devotion to the Most Holy Virgin, expressed by the humble sign of the Scapular, is the consecration to her Immaculate Heart.” At Fatima Mary called for the consecration to her Immaculate Heart. In 2001, on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the bestowal of the Brown Scapular, the Holy Father said "Over time, this rich Marian heritage of Carmel has become, through the spread of the Holy Scapular devotion, a treasure for the whole Church."
To be eligible for the scapular promise, one must be enrolled in the Brown Scapular Confraternity. This is a simple ceremony which can be performed by any priest. The members of the Confraternity have the added benefit of sharing in all the spiritual benefits of the Carmelite Order. At most of our monthly Holy Rosary Rallies, we offer attendees who have not already enrolled the opportunity to do so-- along with their first Brown Scapular.
According to a statement made by the Carmelite Fathers at the National Scapular Center, every priest now has the right to invest the faithful in the Brown Scapular and to substitute the rosary in lieu of the Little Office. The scapular must be 100% wool without plastic casing and should not be pinned or affixed to clothing. It is worn over the head, under one’s clothes, with one square of wool hanging on the chest and the other on the back.

In reparation for sins to help restore God's peace to the hearts of mankind
“Take this Scapular, it shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and a pledge of peace. Whosoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire. Wear the Scapular devoutly and perseveringly. It is my garment. To be clothed in it means you are continually thinking of me, and I in turn, am always thinking of you and helping you to secure eternal life.”
Promise of Our Blessed Mother Mary to St. Simon Stock on July 16, 1251
At the Fatima October 13th 1917 apparition, Our Blessed Mother first identified herself as Our Lady of the Rosary. Following the Miracle of the Sun, she also appeared Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, holding and offering a brown Scapular.
One of the children to witness the apparition of Our Blessed Mother at Fatima (Lucia dos Santos) later stated that "Our Lady wants everyone to wear it (the brown scapular); it is the sign of consecration to her Immaculate Heart.”
In 1950 Pope Pius XII wrote the following: "Take this scapular which Our Lady has given as a sign of consecration to her Immaculate Heart. Go out and convince the world that it must be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin if it will find peace. Go out and through this scapular re-dedicate families especially to the Holy Mother of God, who has shown her graces so abundantly through this scapular. May the Scapular be a sign to them (all who wear it) of their consecration to the Most Pure Heart of the Immaculate Virgin, which in recent times we have so strongly recommended."
There is a picture of a young Karol Wojtyla as a factory worker posing with a friend. He is wearing a big smile and a very visible Brown Scapular. As Pope John Paul II, he recalled how he wore his Scapular from about age 10.

Why Pray the Holy Rosary?
In late 1957, Sister Lucia, the one surviving child of the three who witnessed the apparition of our Blessed Mother at Fatima in 1917 said the following:
“The Most Holy Virgin, in these last of times in which we live, has given a new efficacy to the praying of the Holy Rosary to such an extent that no there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or above all spiritual in the personal life of each one of us, of our families . . . . that cannot be solved by the Rosary. There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the holy Rosary. With the holy Rosary, we will save ourselves; we will sanctify ourselves; we will console our Lord and obtain the salvation of many souls.” Sister Lucia dos Santos
At each of her six apparitions to the three children at Fatima, Our Blessed Mother never failed to remind and urge them to always pray the Holy Rosary:
"Let people say the rosary every day. Our Lady stated that repeatedly in all her apparitions, as if to fortify us against these times of diabolical disorientation, so that we would not allow ourselves to be deceived by false doctrines." Sister Lucia dos Santos
Other saints and spiritual leaders of the Catholic Church have also emphasized the incredible power and the great importance of regular (daily) praying of the Holy Rosary, including:
“The Rosary is the most beautiful and the most rich in graces of all prayers; it is the prayer that touches most the Heart of the Mother of God . . . and if you wish peace to reign in your homes, recite the family Rosary.” Pope Saint Pius X
“One day, through the Rosary and the Scapular, Our Lady will save the world.” Saint Dominic
“The Rosary is a powerful weapon to put the demons to flight and to keep oneself from sin…If you desire peace in your hearts, in your homes, and in your country, assemble each evening to recite the Rosary. Let not even one day pass without saying it, no matter how burdened you may be with many cares and labors.” Pope Pius XI
“The rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the rosary is beyond description.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen
"How beautiful is the family that recites the Rosary every evening!" St. John Paul II
"The Rosary is a prayer both so humble and simple and theologically rich in Biblical content. I beg you to pray it." St. John Paul II
"Go to the Madonna. Love her! Always say the Rosary. Say it well. Say it as often as you can! Be souls of prayer. Never tire of praying, it is what is essential. Prayer shakes the Heart of God, it obtains necessary graces! The Rosary is the 'weapon' for these times." Saint Padre Pio
"Some people are so foolish that they think they can go through life without the help of the Blessed Mother. Love the Madonna and pray the rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother." Saint Padre Pio
“If our age in its pride laughs at and rejects Our Lady’s Rosary, a countless legion of the most saintly men of every age and of every condition have not only held it most dear and have most piously recited it but have also used it at all times as a most powerful weapon to overcome the devil, to preserve the purity of their lives, to acquire virtue more zealously, in a word, to promote peace among men.” Pope Pius XI
